Capoeira is a Brazilian art form which combines fight, dance, rhythm and movement. Capoeira is a dialog between players – a conversation through movement which can take on many shades of meaning. The details of capoeira’s origins and early history are still a matter of debate among historians, but it is clear that African slaves played a crucial role in the development of the art form. Some historians claim that slaves used capoeira’s dance-like appearance as a way to hide their training of combat and self-defense.
One of the fastest growing art forms in the world today, Capoeira is dynamic and fun. Unique in that it is “played” to music and song, its techniques vary from exciting aerial kicks and gymnastic (or acrobatic) movements to deceptive sleights of the hand and foot. Part of the training will include learning how to play the traditional instruments of capoeira as well as learning how to speak Portuguese!
Classes are fun, energetic, and challenging. We focus on using your own body weight to go through movements, so no additional equipment is necessary. You will develop a toned body with better agility, reflexes, power, and stamina.
