Taekwondo is the art of self-defense that originated in Korea and is practiced around the world by almost 80 million people in 206 member nations of the World Taekwondo Federation. Taekwondo can be traced as far back as 2,000 years with roots in many older Korean styles. During Japanese occupation, traditional Korean martial arts could not be practiced because of the regulations dictated by the Japanese government.

Many of the traditional arts had to be practiced in secret. It was not until the end of the Japanese occupation that the name Taekwondo was adopted to describe a new unified version of Korean martial arts.

The modern name of Taekwondo appropriately describes the modern art:
Tae – kick or jump
Kwon – fist or hand
Do – the way

Taekwondo offers a variety of physical and mental benefits. From self-defense to losing weight, Taekwondo is a martial art for all ages. It can be an individual sport, a partner sport or a group sport.
